The Women’s Ministry seeks to:

Welcome all women to Sycamore as Christ has welcomed us.

I commend to you our sister…that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, (Romans 16:1-2a ESV)

Do life together.

…and help her in whatever she may need from you, (Romans 16:2b ESV)

Help women grow in their relationship with Christ.

So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith… (Colossians 2:6-7a NIV)

Help women understand and fulfill Christ’s purpose in their lives.

We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work… (Colossians 1:9b-10a NIV)

Walk each other faithfully to our ultimate home.

For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come. (Hebrews 13:14 NLT)

"Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing."
1 Thessalonians 5:11

Bible Study

Join us for our Fall 2021 Bible studies!  We have two Wednesday morning studies beginning at 10 AM with fellowship, snacks, and a short devotion with the Pastor before heading to the studies at 10:30 AM.

  • “Beautiful Feet” taught by author Barbara Markland.  This study may be attended in person or via Zoom.
  • The ‘I AM‘ statements of Jesus taught by Kate Maguire.  This will be an in person small group study. (This class is full)

We also offer a Tuesday evening study led by Maryann Whitaker, discussing Jen Wilken’s book on Hebrews at her Liz Moore office at 6:30 PM. This study began on Tuesday, September 14.

More information on the studies:

Beautiful Feet study:

The Bible says that people who step out there and obey God, who willingly go even when they’re scared or tired, those people have Beautiful Feet.  (Romans 10:15) The Bible has quite a few everyday people with wrinkles and warts … and Beautiful Feet. Have you ever wondered … Was Noah’s heart pounding as his feet climbed into the ark? Did Moses pause before his feet stepped into the parted Red Sea?  Let’s step back in time and follow those footprints left for us by the Beautiful Feet of Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Ruth, David, Peter, Ananias, Barnabas … and Jesus, Son of God.  What about your feet?  Where is God leading you?  “Beautiful Feet leave footprints that others will follow.  Who will be following yours?”

11-chapter Bible study with Barbara’s commentary and lots of practical application woven into each chapter.

Wednesday morning study, begins Sept 22
Led by Barbara Markland

The “I AM” Statements of Jesus study:

Who is Jesus, and how does He describe Himself?  In the book of John, we see Jesus give seven “I AM” statements:  I am the Bread of life;  I am the Light of the World; I am the Door of the Sheep; I am the Good Shepherd; I am the Resurrection and the Life;  I am the Way, the Truth and the Life;  and I am the True Vine.  By studying these statements, we get a glimpse into who Jesus really is, and what these titles mean to His followers.  If our identity is to be found in Christ, the answer to “Who am I?” will be better answered if we know Who He is.  Join us as we dive in and study our Savior, the I AM!

Wednesday Morning Study, begins September 22
Led by Kate Maguire

Better: A Study of Hebrews

In this verse-by-verse study of the Book of Hebrews, Jen Wilkin explores how God “provided something better for us” in the person of Jesus Christ (Heb. 11:40). Through stories of Old Testament heroes and practices, the author of Hebrews demonstrates how the new covenant is superior to the old and how Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of every promise. Explore familiar verses in context of the entire Bible, learning how to place your hope and faith in Christ alone.

Lunches

Sharing a meal is a wonderful way to deepen relationships with fellow women in our church family. We often eat lunch together after Wednesday morning bible study. A restaurant location is announced that morning and all are invited to join!

Baby Showers

We love to celebrate babies at Sycamore! It is a special time filled with food, games, and lots of laughter. Announcements will be shared with the church congregation about upcoming baby showers.

Fall Retreat

Every year the Women’s Ministry Team hosts an in-town weekend retreat.

Our 2021 Retreat will be held at Roslyn Retreat Center in Richmond the weekend of Oct 1-3. There will be options to stay both nights (Friday and Saturday), or just one night (Friday), or not stay at all and just attend the speaker sessions and other activities only. The last speaker session will take place Saturday night but for those who choose to spend Saturday night as well, we will be having a wrap-up time on Sunday morning.

Should COVID restrictions interfere with our ability to have the event at Roslyn, we will still plan to hold the retreat at Sycamore Church with no overnight stays.

Our speaker this year is Connally Gilliam who serves locally, nationally, and internationally with the US Navigators through speaking, writing and mentoring. She is based out of Charlottesville, VA and is the co-author, with Paula Rinehart, of the book “And Yet, Undaunted: Embraced by the Goodness of God in the Chaos of Life.”  Her book will serve as the theme for our retreat this year and is the selection for our Summer Book study.

The retreat is filled with rich time together in worship, teaching, discussion, and prayer along with laughter, good food and making or strengthening friendships! So, mark your calendars, ladies! The Women’s Retreat, the Lord willing, will take place this year!

More information and announcements will be forthcoming. In the meantime, we hope and pray many of you can join us this year at our annual Women’s Retreat in October!

Prayer Meeting and Requests
There will be a prayer meeting every first Friday of the month at 10:30-12:30pm at Sycamore church in the Parlor to pray for many of the concerns and needs we have as women of this congregation and as part of the family of God. We invite all women to join us in this prayer endeavor or if you have a prayer request that you would like this group to lift up in prayer please send it to Beth Sheffield at [email protected]. Confidential prayer requests can be marked as such in the e-mail and will only be shared with the core team.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

Other Events & Activities

Throughout the year, we offer other opportunities to serve and spend time with other women in the church as well as others in the community. Announcements about these opportunities are made through Ministry Moments or our church newsletter. Stay tuned!
